First-year Graphic Design BA Honours student Abu-Bakr Moolla has received Silver in the World Brand Design Society (WBDS) Student Awards, marking him as the first student from the University of Westminster to receive this international honour and placing Westminster in the top 30 for Best Design Education Institutions globally.

Abu-Bakr was awarded the prize for his project SNAP Chocolate, a Swiss chocolate concept brand that reimagines how children aged 5-12 engage with confectionery. Developed as a speculative branding project rather than a commercial product, SNAP Chocolate explores what a chocolate brand could look like if it fully embraced children’s sense of adventure. Drawing on bold typography, vibrant colour palettes and illustrations, the identity creates a lively visual world that mirrors the spontaneity and imagination of childhood.
Judges praised the strength of this creative direction, recognising the project for its inventive world‑building and its new, unconventional approach to confectionery branding.Abu-Bakr’s win has directly impacted Westminster’s WBDS standing. Not only is it now ranked in the top 30 for Best Design Education Institutions globally by the WBDS, but his win also places the Graphic Design BA Honours course alongside world-leading design schools.
About the award Abu-Bakr said: “Winning this award is a truly proud moment for me. I've always aimed to push myself out of my comfort zone, take big risks and not let the fear of failure hold me back from trying. Being able to see my work receive huge recognition and contribute towards Westminster ranking in the top 30 globally is a surreal feeling and I'm already excited for whatever is next!”
The opportunity for Abu-Bakr to develop his project during his time at Westminster contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4: Quality Education and 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. Since 2019, the University of Westminster has used the SDGs holistically to frame strategic decisions to help students and colleagues fulfil their potential and contribute to a more sustainable, equitable and healthier society.
