University of Westminster Graphic Communication Design student Federica Caputo has won the 2023 Hallmark Connection Award under the New Designers Award programme. This award includes a paid internship in the Hallmark creative studio.

Federica submitted a publication exploring the shape and multiple meanings of the circle.

Hallmark Award judges included Hallmark UK's Rachel Goodman, Creative Director; Eve Gray, Creative Development Director; Kelly Wykman, Design Director; Heather Williams, Trend Strategist; and Holly Ismail, Head of NPD, Innovation and Licensing. They said: “We love her clever interpretation and expansion of such a simple form, executed with a beautiful graphic sensibility and delivered through engaging storytelling.”

Frederica’s 50 x 70 cm printed publication addressed her theme throughout several chapters, with options to access additional content through augmented reality and QR codes.

Frederica said: “The choice of format can be traced back to a standard poster or a painting, which subverts our normal expectations for a publication. The reason for the choice lies in the fact that I created analogue and digital experiments within the publication. These unique images are, in fact, the result of a combination of different disciplines.”

Federica is a graduating student on the Westminster Graphic Communication Design BA programme. She said: “My experience at Westminster has changed the way I do graphic design. I learnt a lot from my excellent teachers, who prepared me well for the world of work.”

In 2022 the Graphic Communication Design BA Honours course was revalidated and retitled Graphic Design BA Honours.
