From applying to Westminster through Clearing to winning the Social Impact prize at the University’s annual Final Year Project Showcase in partnership with global IT consultancy Netcompany, Computer Science BSc Honours student Ajay Dhillon’s journey is a testament to hard work and commitment to making a difference. Here he shares the story behind his award-winning final-year project KnowMySkin and how his time at Westminster has supported his goal to help others.

Why did you choose to study at the University of Westminster?
I chose Westminster through Clearing because I was just one grade away from getting into my firm and insurance choices. When I came across the University, I did some research into everything Westminster had to offer, and I found it was the best fit for me. Things that stood out to me were the British Computer Society (BCS) accreditation for the Computer Science course, its central location, modern computer laboratories, free gym facilities and lots of Students’ Union societies I could get involved with.
How was your experience with the Clearing process and what advice would you give anyone thinking about going through Clearing this year?
My experience with the Clearing process was very quick, easy and simple. At first, I was hesitant to go through Clearing, but it was easy to find and see which courses were available through Clearing on the website and when calling the Clearing hotline. The Westminster colleague was very helpful with letting me know what courses were available to me based on my A-level results. They took a few details and that was it - it was very hassle free.
My advice would be to think positively. Clearing can seem daunting especially if you didn’t get your firm or insurance choices or get the grades you wanted. Clearing is a step in the right direction and means you can still go to university and get the same university experience as others. Also, research. This is key to find the right place for you, see what the course you want to do offers, as well as what the university can offer you. Lastly, be ready and flexible. Have your UCAS ID, Clearing number and exam results ready when calling and be flexible with your choices. Consider all options including alternative courses or institutions to find the best fit for your academic and personal goals.
Can you tell us a bit about KnowMySkin?
KnowMySkin (KMSkin) is a mobile app designed for the early detection and classification of skin diseases. Users can upload or take a photo of a skin lesion, which is then analysed by a neural network model that classifies it into one of seven categories. The app also features educational content to raise awareness about various skin conditions, along with an interactive AI chatbot that provides support and information.
Beyond its technological capabilities, KnowMySkin has a significant social impact. By improving access to early detection, especially in remote or underserved communities with limited access to dermatologists, the app can help reduce the severity of skin diseases and improve survival rates. Through AI-driven analysis and user-friendly educational resources, KnowMySkin encourages individuals to take a proactive approach to managing their skin health.
What inspired you to develop KnowMySkin?
The inspiration for KnowMySkin came 15 years ago, when my grandma was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer. She repeatedly went to doctors because something wasn’t right but kept being told she was fine, until one day they found something, and it was too late. My family wasn’t familiar with the signs and symptoms to look out for and didn’t have the education needed to understand. I wanted to develop an application to help tackle this issue and prevent others going through the same experience with their loved ones.
KnowMySkin won the Social Impact prize at the Final Year Showcase after impressing a panel of industry professionals. What does social impact mean to you?
To me, social impact begins with making a meaningful difference to the life of even one person. That individual can then go on to inspire or support others, creating a ripple effect that contributes to positive change in society. I hope to do this through KnowMySkin by making support and education more accessible to people around the world.
What did it feel like to win this prize?
I was honoured to win the Social Impact prize. This recognition is a meaningful milestone in both my personal and professional journey, reflecting the dedication and effort I’ve put in over the past few years which has led to my First Class Honours degree.
How has Westminster helped you achieve your goals?
Westminster has helped me achieve my goals in so many ways: personally, academically, mentally and physically. They provide a wide range of support, facilities and events, including opportunities to get career ready through events like as Employability Week, wellbeing and mental health support and free sports facilities.
Looking ahead, what are your career aspirations?
I’m currently working with Apple as a Specialist, providing customers with technical support and helping them choose the right device. I’m in the process of moving to an Expert/Pro role, which I hope to continue.
Looking forward, my aim is to start a full-time job as a software engineer and potentially open my own business one day.
What advice would you give to other Westminster students looking to make a difference in the world?
Take the leap, take the risk and make the most of the opportunities given to you at Westminster, because it could lead to something great!
