A team of second-year students representing the University of Westminster’s Business School have secured a spot in the Universities Business Challenge (UBC) final, which is due to take place at the University of St Andrews in Scotland on Friday 22 March.

Yick Long Tam, Sophia Peacock, Pamindu Thehan Gallehewa and Sheila Pham took part in the Universities Business Challenge semi-final on Friday 1 March, where they had to run a business simulation for three trading periods and create a poster and presentation about a coffee shop, relating it to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

The event was held at the University of Westminster’s Cavendish Campus and was attended by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Global Engagement and Employability Professor Dibyesh Anand who inaugurated the event, presenting the successful teams with certificates.

The University of Westminster team’s success follows on from their impressive performance as runners-up in last year’s final, which took place in Liverpool. This year, the team is under the guidance of Senior Lecturer Dr Jie Wen from the Westminster Business School, who will help prepare them to present at the finals later this month.

The UBC is the world’s longest-running simulation-based competition for undergraduates, which is designed to help students develop skills to start and develop new businesses. These include creativity, presentation and pitching skills, business strategy, investment and marketing decisions.

Over 35,000 students worldwide have benefitted from participating in the UBC. The competition involves three challenging rounds, with over 250 other university teams competing for a spot in the final and a chance to win.

About the UBC, Pamindu Thehan Gallehewa said: “The Universities Business Challenge is an incredible platform that fosters employability and enterprise skills among students, and we're grateful for the support and opportunities it provides. Winning the semi-finals, held on March 1 at our very own Cavendish Campus, has been an exhilarating experience, especially with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dibyesh Anand, inaugurating the event.

“Looking ahead, we're gearing up for the finals on March 22nd at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. The support and encouragement from our faculty and peers have been overwhelming, and we're determined to make our university proud.”
