Yesterday, the School of Architecture + Cities at Westminster released a short film and catalogue of a selection of students’ work as a preview of the OPEN 2020 virtual degree show launching on 16 July.

Despite the closure of campuses, the School was determined to continue with OPEN 2020 to celebrate the hard work of graduating Architecture and Design students. This year’s virtual OPEN event that launches on 16 July will allow students to display their exhibition material online despite the unprecedented circumstances they have faced.

The exhibition is accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue and film that feature work from students across the School as a taster of what is to come in the full launch of the virtual degree show. The opening of the catalogue looks ‘Beyond the Studio’ to illustrate the work that happens in other areas of the Architecture and Design courses, including through the Fabrication Lab, Dissertation and Technical Studies.

It also highlights work from across the School, from the Interior Architecture BA Honours, Architectural Technology BSc Honours, Designing Cities: Planning and Architecture BA Honours, Architecture and Environmental Design BSc Honours, Architecture BA HonoursMaster of Architecture (MArch) (RIBA pt II), Architecture MA, Interior Architecture MA and Architecture and Environmental Design MSc courses. Each section includes a page discussing the course and its contents, followed by highlights of projects from first, second, and third year students.

The short film opens with students in their home workspaces and features short clips of them working on their individual projects. The video then showcases a reel of design highlights created by students as part of their projects.

Talking about their work, Professor Harry Charrington, Head of School at the School of Architecture + Cities, said: “The School’s commitment to resilient and strategic design, ethical and cross-disciplinary practice, inclusive and environmentally responsive place-making, low-carbon and innovative building and rigorous research and testing, have never been more important, and we will continue to develop these in our architectural work with ever greater intensity and generosity in the coming decade. The projects in OPEN2020 point a way.”

OPEN 2020 will go virtual on 16 July as an exhibition of projects that reflect the varied design approaches of the School of Architecture + Cities’s diverse students, and their place at the heart of London. The event will feature works from over 750 students and will open with a keynote speech from eminent designer Professor Sadie Morgan OBE.
The exhibition will be open until 30 September.
