Interview: Student finds "sense of belonging" at Westminster thanks to Clearing

For many students, Clearing can feel like a last-minute scramble, but for one international student, it became the gateway to an unforgettable academic journey. In this interview, a University of Westminster Law LLB student Tanya Gowreesunker
shares how a late decision to study abroad led her to go through Clearing at Westminster, and how the University’s support, practical learning opportunities and inclusive community made it all worthwhile.

How did you find the Clearing process?

I applied through Clearing because I made the decision to study abroad quite late, and it was a rollercoaster to say the least. On top of choosing a course and university, I had to navigate all the logistics that come with moving from Mauritius to another country.

But going through Clearing at Westminster made it less overwhelming. The University was extremely supportive. They provided guidance through each step and answered my questions promptly, and overall made the experience less daunting.

In the end, everything worked seamlessly, and thanks to the Clearing process, I was able to find the right place, even on a tight timeline.

What advice would you give to students going through Clearing this year?

My biggest piece of advice is to not panic or rush into a decision just to get it over with. Applying through Clearing is generally quite overwhelming, but it is also a chance to find the right place and course that genuinely fits you.

Research each course you have an interest in and have a look at the modules offered, the campus, the support offered by the university and the extracurricular opportunities.

Consider seeking the advice of your family, friends or teachers; they may bring up things you may not have previously considered and ultimately remember that applying through Clearing is not as daunting as you think.

Why did you choose to come to university in general, and why the University of Westminster?

I wanted to push myself academically and to open more opportunities for my future. It was not just about getting a degree, but experiencing a new environment, learning to be more independent and building a strong foundation for the career path I chose to pursue later on.

There are multiple reasons that ultimately led me to study at Westminster. At first, it was the geographical location, being in Central London makes it easier to access a plethora of opportunities. Additionally, being able to gain practical experience as a Law student while volunteering at Westminster's Legal Advice Clinic. The ability to put into practice the skills I had learned in the course was one of the primary reasons I chose the University.

Westminster has wonderful initiatives such as the Westminster Working Cultures programme, and Summer Exchange and Volunteering programmes abroad, which help students broaden their horizons and build their critical thinking skills outside the lecture halls.

Applying to Westminster has ultimately been one of the best decisions I have made and I would not have done it differently!

What do you wish you had known about the Clearing process?

I wish I had known how straightforward it is. I was anxious about applying at the last minute and was worried about visa deadlines. However, once I started, I realised that UCAS made the process a lot easier, and Westminster was incredibly helpful and responsive in answering my queries, which made it a lot easier to navigate.

How has your experience been so far at the University of Westminster?

Studying at Westminster has been extremely rewarding. The University has an incredibly diverse community where everyone feels welcome, so it has always felt like Westminster was home away from home in a sense.

Through platforms such as Engage and Talent Bank, students are able to find part-time jobs and graduate schemes as well as support with CV writing through employability workshops. The strong focus that Westminster places on getting their students ready for the world of work makes me more confident about preparing for life after graduation.

My experience at Westminster has challenged me in the right ways, given me a sense of belonging and built my confidence for what lies ahead.

What has been your favourite moment since you started at Westminster?

This one is quite difficult to answer. I have so many wonderful memories, from travelling to Sweden on the summer exchange programme and tasting the best desserts during FIKA, to participating in the Westminster Working Cultures trip to Egypt, where I gained new insights from industry professionals. Westminster has given me incredible memories I shall cherish forever.

My favourite moment would have to be the Welcome Week events during my first year. I had received my visa just the night before induction week, quickly booked a flight and arrived in London on a late-night journey. I landed in the morning, barely had time for a shower and a quick cup of tea, and then headed straight to the University.

At the time, it felt incredibly daunting, being in a completely new environment, surrounded by people I had never met, and running purely on adrenaline. But looking back, that moment is one I am proud of. I stepped out of my comfort zone without hesitation, and it marked the beginning of my journey toward becoming a more confident and independent person. That first day reminded me that growth often starts when we take the leap, even if at that moment you are filled with uncertainty.

Why did you want to study Law?

Growing up, I was always drawn to the humanities. While exploring the options that Westminster offered, I found myself drawn to the Law LLB course. Law combined my loved for languages, thirst for knowledge and challenged my ability to think critically and consider alternative perspectives. At first, I had doubts about whether a legal career was the right fit for me, but what I truly enjoy about my course is that there is a lot of flexibility in terms of options, so that you are able to tailor your modules to your career path.

What are your hopes for the future?

Looking ahead, I hope to build a career that allows me to make a positive impact, whether it is in my field of study or working with communities.

I love travelling and taking on new challenges, so I also hope to be able to travel more, meet more people from different backgrounds and as I did when I first came to university, I hope to learn new things and to take on challenges that keep me growing both personally and professionally.
