Professor Zariwala was invited as an international guest to the conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, titled Transformation of Training, Retraining and Continuous Postgraduate Education of Professional Managers of the Healthcare System of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Running between 17-18 October, the event was organised by the Uzbekistan Ministry of Health’s Department of Public Health and Healthcare Management in collaboration with Samarkand State Medical University.

Professor Zariwala was joined by collaborators and colleagues from Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT), the leading international university in Uzbekistan, which was co-founded by the University of Westminster in 2002. Earlier this year, Westminster renewed its partnership with WIUT for a further five years.

Opening the conference, Professor Zariwala shared the stage with leading figures in healthcare and education, including Dr Komiljon Karimov, Rector of WIUT; Professor Damin Abdurahimovich Asadov, Head of the Department of Public Health at the Tashkent Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education (TIPME); and Professor Jasur Alimjanovich Rizayev, Rector of the Samarkand State Medical University.

Professor Zariwala was recognised for his innovative work and ongoing contribution to Uzbekistan’s healthcare and education before delivering the welcome speech, where he shared insights on Westminster’s Centre for Nutraceuticals’ ongoing research and initiatives in public health. This included the integration of evidence-backed dietary supplements into healthcare and advancement of medical postgraduate training and education in Uzbekistan.

As a leading global thought leader in healthcare, Professor Zariwala was also invited to lead a meeting to coordinate actions across other Central Asian countries, including Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Earlier this year he also gave a presentation at an event organised by the Government of India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry earlier this year.

About the conference Professor Zariwala said: “This conference was a great opportunity to highlight the Centre’s work in promoting the integration of evidence backed supplements and nutraceuticals in public health practices and policies on a global level. It was a privilege to have the opportunity to make a contribution to strengthening the education and public health ecosystem across Uzbekistan and the wider Central Asian region.”

Professor Zariwala’s work and the Centre for Nutraceuticals’ international collaborations continue to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3: Good Health and Wellbeing and 17: Partnerships for the Goals.  Since 2019, the University of Westminster has used the SDGs holistically to frame strategic decisions to help students and colleagues fulfil their potential and contribute to a more sustainable, equitable and healthier society.
