Welcome to your course
Congratulations on being accepted onto the BSc Architectural Technology degree at the School of Architecture and Cities. During induction week, we will introduce you to the course, the teaching team, and your fellow students, while also guiding you through the facilities, resources, and support services available across the campus.
At the heart of our approach is authentic teaching. This means you will learn through studio work, small group activities, and active interaction, rather than through one sided delivery. This approach has proven to be highly effective, enabling you to develop knowledge through participation, collaboration, and engagement.
This is an exciting time to study Architectural Technology. Over the coming year, you will develop a strong foundation in architectural design, gain insight into professional practice, and explore passive design principles within our dedicated Architectural Technology Studio. Your learning will be supported by lectures, seminars, and laboratory sessions delivered by tutors from a range of disciplines, offering diverse perspectives. You will also receive training in our Fabrication Laboratory, giving you access to a wide range of tools and technologies to support your design and making skills.
We are very proud of what our students have achieved over the past year. They have explored small scale building modelling through fabrication, collaborated with students across architecture courses, and investigated sustainable drainage design through physical modelling and testing, supported by expert input. Study visits, including a trip to Cambridge, provided opportunities to experience important architectural projects such as the award winning mosque, which connects closely to second and third year design briefs focused on community funded projects in London. Some students have also worked with architectural practices as part of the London Festival of Architecture, contributing to exhibitions, while others designed and constructed a full scale pavilion that has been exhibited to the public in multiple locations.
Our first year students also took part in the highly successful Climate Emergency Week. Activities included participation in the Climate Fresk simulation, helping them develop a deeper understanding of the climate crisis. Third year students engaged with professional practice and gained valuable experience through placements in architectural firms.

Welcome to the School of Architecture + Cities
During your time at the School, the focus is on your work and creative outputs, and we are committed to helping you achieve your full potential. In addition to our full-time teaching staff, leading practitioners teach on our courses, while employers mentor students. The School brings together a variety of disciplines to address current and future environmental and social challenges, from urban and environmental design to architecture, architectural technology, interior architecture, planning, and transport. Our Marylebone campus is perfectly located for exploring London and houses some of the most advanced teaching and fabrication spaces in the city.

All new students are invited to an outdoor cinema event at Harrow Campus. The college will be providing one free drink and a choice of snack for the first 500 attendees, as well as a paid bar during the screening.
Architecture & Cities Boat trip tour
10.30am, meeting location: Crown Pier, *Drop off at Greenwich Pier (opportunity to visit National Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark, The Observatory).

Blackboard
Blackboard is our online learning platform, which you'll be able to log in to after you've set up your University email address and password.
Teaching timetables
Teaching starts in the week commencing Monday 21 September and you can check your teaching timetable to see when and where your classes are being held.

Equipment and materials
Digital technology
While you can borrow laptops through the University for 24 hours, it's better to have your own. If you're not sure what to buy, our technical support team can advise you once you've enrolled.
You'll be eligible for a student discount on computer purchases.
A smart phone with a good camera function is very useful for recording your work and for online communication.
Art materials
We ask all new students to come equipped for study, so we've put together a list of essential equipment and drawing supplies, working with an art supplier to come up with a special package deal [BSc Architectural Technology ArtKit]. You can view and pre-order here: Artway by Thursday 14th Sept, to ensure your BScAT ArtKit is ready for collection at the University on 19th Sept.
You may already have some of the items listed so we are happy for you to source the complete list yourself, however, please be aware that there are a very few art supply shops in central London and these sell out of the basics near the start of the academic year. If you buy the kit online from our supplier, bring your purchase receipt to collect your BScAT ArtKit on Tuesday 16th September.
