Expanded Photography MA course induction

Welcome to your course

Welcome to the Expanded Photography MA. We look forward to meeting you and to launching you on a course of study that will be creative, exciting, and fulfilling.

Teaching sessions include workshops, lectures, seminar discussions, group discussions of practice and theory, and one-to-one tutorials. It will take place at the Harrow Campus, with some events (including some visiting speaker talks, some individual tutorials and some digital workshops) offered online.

There are some key dates to bear in mind as you start your MA. These can be found in the induction schedule below. Following these, we will commence the full MA programme as we work with you to develop your practice and research over the coming year.

Welcome to Westminster School of Arts

We are delighted that you are joining our vibrant and exciting community where we aim to support you in achieving your creative and academic potential. We are committed to your development, and we have a team of permanent teaching staff, leading practitioners, technical support staff and industry partners who you will work with in a variety of ways through your journey at Westminster.

Based on our Harrow Campus, the School of Arts benefits from generous spaces for students to undertake their creative practice, join community events and a full suite of some of the most advanced technical and digital workshops.

During Welcome Week, we have planned a programme of activities for you, to help you navigate your way around the campuses, understand how to engage with your course team and space to get to know one another. Please do attend these events.

We look forward to meeting you in Welcome Week and seeing you and your creative work flourish at Westminster.

With every best wish

Equipment and materials

Do I need my own equipment?

Yes. You should arrive with your own basic set-up—camera(s) and equipment ready to use for work you already usually make. Your camera can be either digital or analogue. This will be your first technical starting-point, unless recommended otherwise by tutors. You will have inductions to university equipment prior to using them. We may also offer various workshops, including studio lighting, scanners, darkroom and digital printing facilities.

Will I be able to borrow photography equipment from the University?

Yes. We operate both digital and analogue systems and carry much equipment in our stores. You may borrow equipment for your course work when you have been inducted to using it by technicians. MA students have certain priorities, we will introduce you to these. Equipment may be booked in advance.

What materials will I need to bring?

You will need:

Paper, notebook or digital device for taking notes in class

Pens and pencils

Do I need my own photographic paper?

Yes. For tutorials and group sessions you will regularly need to make ‘work prints’ of your images. If you are used to working primarily on computer screens this will be new. You will also occasionally also be asked to bring ‘contact prints’ of the images you have shot to tutorials too. If you are unclear about these technical things, please see: Angela Farris Belt, The Elements of Photography (Focal Press, 2008).

For wet chemical darkroom work (e.g. larger prints) you will need to supply your own paper (we supply the chemicals etc.). For larger digital prints on university machines inks are provided, but you must usually pay for paper (at a basic cost rate) when you print.

Where can I buy photographic materials in London?

Many photographic materials are available at cost from the photography store on campus. There are many sources for analogue and digital materials in London and UK wide. A longer list will be available at the University, but the following link is useful to know:

http://www.processuk.net (Standard professional photographic materials)

Note: film, memory cards and related materials for your project work are not normally provided by the University except for some organised workshops—many of these items are available at cost from the Harrow Campus photography store. Darkroom chemicals and film processing are currently provided by the University. University digital printers, computers and software are all run at cost value for inks and paper.
