Eduroam is a secure wireless service that is available across our campuses and gives you free internet access from your laptop or mobile device.

Before you use the service

In order to connect, you'll need:

  • your University of Westminster user ID and password:
    [your username]@westminster.ac.uk (eg [email protected])
  • an internet connection

How to connect to eduroam WiFi

To access eduroam WiFi, you'll first need to set up eduroam on your device. The easiest and most secure way to set up your connection is to download the eduroam Configuration Assistance Tool (CAT).

If you're unable to connect with the eduroam CAT, you can manually set up eduroam on your device (see our guidance further down the page).

Connect by using the eduroam Configuration Assistance Tool (CAT)

You can set up your connection via the eduroam CAT website or by scanning a QR code - follow the instructions for the method you prefer below.

  1. Go to the eduroam CAT website
  2. Click the button - Click here to download your eduroam installer
  3. Select University of Westminster from the list of organisations
  4. Click the Download your eduroam installer for your system (if your system is not displayed click on Choose another installer to download, and select your operating system)
  5. Run the installer
  6. When prompted enter your University user ID and password and click Install
  7. When the installation is complete, click Finish

Connecting with an Android 11 device

If you use Android 11, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Download the geteduroam app on Google Play Store
  2. Follow the eduroam configuration instructions, for Institution enter University of Westminster
  3. You should get the message "Wi-FI is now configured on your device" and you will be connected automatically

Please note: If you have a Samsung device on Android 11, you must have the latest security updates to be able to connect successfully to eduroam

2. Click the blue eduroam installer button for your device (if your system is not displayed click on Choose another installer to download, and select your operating system)

3. Run the installer

4. When prompted enter your University user ID and password and click Install

5. When the installation is complete, click Finish.

Connecting to eduroam at other universities

Once you've set up eduroam on your device with the eduroam CAT, you'll be able to connect to the service at other universities and institutions that use eduroam WiFi.

You'll need to use your University of Westminster username and password, eg [email protected].

Connecting manually to eduroam

If you're unable to connect with the eduroam CAT, you can manually set up eduroam on your device. Please note, this method is less secure than using the eduroam CAT.

Please follow the instructions for your operating system below.

  1. Click the 'Network' icon on your device to view a list of available networks.
  2. Select eduroam from the list of available networks and select 'Connect'.
  3. When prompted enter your University of Westminster user ID and password (eg [email protected]) and click OK
  4. You'll be asked if you wish to continue connecting? Select 'Connect'
  5. If successfully authenticated the status will change to 'Connected' and you will now be connected to the eduroam service

The following instructions will enable you to connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to the eduroam WiFi network.

  1. Go to your 'Settings' app and select 'Wi-Fi'"
  2. Select "eduroam"
  3. Enter your University of Westminster user ID (eg [email protected])
  4. Enter your password
  5. You will be asked to trust a QuoVadis Root CA 2 G3 certificate
  6. Touch "Accept" to trust this certificate
  7. You will be returned to your device's "Wi-Fi" screen
  8. Open your browser and access the internet

There are two ways that you can connect as set out below. You'll first need to open System Preferences, by clicking on the apple icon in the top left of the screen and selecting System Preferences.

Method one

  1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences
  2. Select the wireless network icon from the menu bar and select eduroam
  3. Select Mode: Automatic
  4. Provide your University of Westminster username ([your username]@westminster.ac.uk) and Password
  5. Select Join
  6. You will be asked to trust the certificate, select "Accept" or "Trust"

Method two

  1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences
  2. Under the Internet & Wireless section of the Systems Preferences screen, choose Network
  3. On the Network screen, choose Wi-Fi. If Wi-Fi is not on, click the Turn Wi-Fi On
  4. From the 802.1X list below Network Name, choose Wi-Fi (eduroam) and then click Connect
  5. You will be asked to enter your University of Westminster username ([your username]@westminster.ac.uk) and Password
  6. Click OK
  7. The first time you connect to eduroam, you’ll be asked to verify the certificate for eduroam. Click Continue to accept the certificate

    You will then see a screen that says “You are making changes to your Certificate Trust Settings. Type your password to allow this.” Type the password you use to log into your computer and click Update Settings to connect to the network.
     
  8. You should now be connected to eduroam

If you have already tried to connect to eduroam on your Android device and have been unsuccessful, then before following the instructions below you’ll need to select the eduroam network from your WiFi list and select ‘forget’. Then refresh your wireless networks list (or you can switch WiFi on and off), and try connecting to eduroam and enter the settings as below:

  1. Tap the ‘Settings’ icon
  2. Tap ‘Wireless and network’
  3. Tap ‘Wi-Fi Settings’
  4. Tick the ‘Wi-Fi’ checkbox
  5. Select eduroam when it appears in the ‘Wi-Fi networks’ section
  6. Important: In the ‘EAP method menu’ select ‘PEAP’ (some other universities have this set to TTLS, TLS or something else, which may cause issues when connecting to eduroam at the University of Westminster)
  7. Leave the ‘Phase 2 authentication menu’ blank or whatever the default value is
  8. Leave both ‘CA certificate’ and ‘User certificate’ as (unspecified)
    8a. Newer Android devices may not allow you to leave the CA certificate field blank. In this instance, select 'Use System Certificates' and in the domain field beneath enter ‘westminster.ac.uk’
  9. Swipe upwards on the screen to scroll down the page
  10. In the Identity field enter your University of Westminster username/ID (eg [email protected])
  11. Leave the ‘Anonymous identity’ field blank
  12. In the Password field type your normal University password
  13. Tap ‘Connect’

Problems connecting to eduroam

If you're unable to connect and have previously connected to the network, you may need to remove your device's existing eduroam settings (known as forgetting a WiFi network), and re-connect following the instructions provided above.
