Conflict management skills for line managers

Overview

Course summary

Evidence suggests that conflict at work costs organisations £1000 per employee each year. Who is this course for?

The course primarily targets first-line managers, and the skills it develops can be applied at all levels of management – from supervisors seeking career advancement to senior managers looking to refresh and reinforce their existing knowledge.

Location

This course is taught online at flexible hours during any day of the week.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand and utilise the key questioning and listening skills needed to conduct high quality conversations with members of their team.
  • Prepare and conduct a difficult conversation, using a collaborative approach to move towards a positive outcome.
  • Assess a range of responses to conflict situations and understand the importance of early intervention.

Course structure

The course includes four modules comprised of short video lectures, discussions and insights from leading experts. It includes downloadable templates and simulations designed to test learning.

The four core modules are:

Effective communication: Having conversations with team members is something that managers should do regularly, but are they getting the most out of these conversations? This module develops the questioning and listening skills managers need to help build trust and identify problems at an early stage.

Feedback and difficult conversations: No one enjoys giving negative feedback, but what happens if managers do not address poor performance or behaviour? This module explores how managers can approach difficult conversations and look for positive outcomes through collaborative problem solving.

Deciding to intervene: Managers can be best placed to spot minor issues before they escalate into conflict situations, but how should they decide on the best action to take? This module explores how managers can respond to a range of challenging scenarios effectively.

Resolving conflict in your team: Conflict between members of staff can have a negative impact on the entire team. This module provides managers with skills, based on workplace mediation, that they can use to get to the root cause of problems and develop sustainable resolutions. Managers will have exclusive access to a personal 1:1 conversation with experts from Acas. This conversation can be used to give you confidential advice on how you can use your learning on the course to deal with a specific issue you may be facing at work, or a general discussion to help reinforce and develop your approach to handling conflict effectively.

"Extremely relevant (to my needs), I’m quite new to retail management at this level, and methods I would have used before were a lot more relaxed and inefficient (compared) to the methods I feel I can implement now."
