About me

Sam Jones is a Doctoral Researcher at the School of Computer Science and Engineering, supported by a Quintin Hogg Trust Research Studentship. His current research examines the potential uses of Artificial Intelligence in vocal healthcare for professional singers, using a Machine Learning-based approach.

He read Physics as a Styring Exhibitioner at The Queen's College, University of Oxford, and subsequently was awarded a Distinction for his MSc in Software Engineering at the University of Westminster. His research on Machine Learning as part of his Master's Software Development Project was developed into a conference paper titled Machine Learning for Monitoring Vocal Health and Performance of Professional Singers, co-authored with Dr Saumya Kareem Reni and Prof Izzet Kale, which was presented at the 2024 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems in Singapore.

He also has active research interests in the sustainability and well-being of the freelance performing arts workforce, co-authoring a book on this topic, Making Freelance Work, due for release by Bristol University Press in 2026. As a Welsh language consultant he has an ongoing role in the areas of localisation and speech recognition for the pioneering geolocation app what3words.

As a performing artist, he has built a decades-long career in the fields of opera and classical recital, and was recently elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music in recognition of his contribution to the classical music industry.
