Head of Performance and Economy | Ceredigion County

Urban Planning BA - 1988

London is often at the forefront of planning and it’s extremely valuable to take experiences with you when looking elsewhere. It's also worth trying to get some experience before leaving, as that will give you more options when looking for paid work.

What are you doing now?

I'm Head of Performance and Economy at Ceredigion County Council.

It's a split role combining promoting and delivering economic and regeneration outcomes with a central role helping to ensure the Council is fit for purpose through on-going improvement and transformation.

What did you find most valuable about your course at Westminster? How did the skills you learnt during your degree help you to shape your career?

I can't point to one specific aspect, it was the combination of subject areas covered that gave me a generic grounding that has helped me adapt to changing circumstances and contribute to delivering services.

What was the best thing about being a student in London?

I enjoyed living in London. It's a great city, a wealth of character, vibrant and has a real buzz. I lived in London for 15 years in total before moving back to Wales.

What extra-curricular activities did you participate in that enhanced your time at the University?

I didn't participate too much in University life other than going to the Students' Union (in Bolsover Street) every Wednesday, as I got involved with other clubs.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of pursuing a similar career?

To look for work and gain as much experience as possible in London. London is often at the forefront of planning and it’s extremely valuable to take experiences with you when looking elsewhere. It's also worth trying to get some experience before leaving, as that will give you more options when looking for paid work.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself that may be valuable/interesting to our prospective students or alumni?

I've enjoyed my career. Planning gave me good all-round skills. From there it is about being flexible, adaptable and making the best use of opportunities that come your way. Don't always wait for them though, create them for yourself too.
