Transport and Mobilities is one of five new research groups established by the School of Architecture and Cities in 2021. It is an internationally recognised centre of excellence in research and teaching in transport.

Since 1971, the University of Westminster has established a prominent reputation for carrying out a wide range of academic and applied research covering most transport sectors. The Transport and Mobility Research Group’s vision is to deliver world-class research that contributes to making transport systems and mobilities safe, sustainable, efficient, secure, equitable, accessible to all, and health and wellbeing promoting. Transport and Mobility research embraces this through a programme of research across the transport and city domains and covers a diverse range of aspects of transport and mobility, including city mobilities; active travel; freights; infrastructure investment; networks; accessibility and transport equity.

The Transport and Mobility Research Group works extensively with governments and industry in the UK and all over the world. The principal sponsoring bodies for our research are the European Commission (EC), the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), Engineering and Physical Science Council (EPSRC), NIHR, Central Government, Transport for London (TfL), other local authorities and private organisations. 

ATM Research Centre

The Transport and Mobility Research Group works alongside the Air Traffic Management (ATM) research team, who are currently in the process of forming the ATM Research Centre. This team has led pioneering work in ATM since 1999, primarily funded through SESAR, EUROCONTROL and the European Commission, and carried out in collaboration with airlines, airports, air navigation service providers (ANSPs), software/service providers, and other research institutes. Commercial work has been undertaken in cooperation primarily with universities, airlines, ANSPs and numerous industry partners. The team coordinates the European (SESAR) Knowledge Transfer Network, ‘Engage’, and is currently involved in six Horizon 2020 / SESAR /Clean Sky projects, with a total current contract value of €11.9m.  

Active Travel Academy (ATA) 

The Transport and Mobility Research Group works alongside the Active Travel Academy (ATA), a research and knowledge exchange centre. The ATA’s core funding comes from the Quintin Hogg Trust, with additional projects funded by organisations including the NIHR, Department for Transport, Transport for London, and the KR Foundation. The ATA organises a range of knowledge exchange events including Walking and Cycling @ Teatime, the Active Travel Media Awards, and the ATA Webinar Week. It hosts a range of PhD projects and supports the international Active Travel Postgraduate Network.
