Students from Westminster Business School (WBS) raised £5058.18 for a variety of charities including Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, Save the Children and Cancer Research through a range of fundraising events.

Winning team 5 Star

As part of the Postgraduate Entrepreneurial Mindset and Opportunities Creation module taken by students on the Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Enterprise Development MSc course, students formed groups and held an array of events to raise funds for their chosen charities.

Seven student groups on the module competed to raise the most funds for their chosen charity, with the winning group, 5 Star, raising £1662.48 for the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity. To fundraise they created a social media campaign and distributed posters and leaflets with QR codes to raise awareness and money. The campaign told personal stories of children, giving people the chance to read about their experiences and understand more about what the charity does. On top of this, they sold second hand clothes and accessories, held a guess how many sweets are in the jar competition and sold fresh juices.

Other fundraising events organised by other teams included board games and pizza nights, yoga classes, baking and flower sales and karaoke nights.

All groups achieved great heights with their projects, with the Unity Blend Crafters raising £1020 for Water Aid, G&T raising £1007.70 for Save the Children, Mavericks raising £738 for Chattertots, Risk raiding £550 for Cancer Research and The Idea Factory raising £80 for London Reach.

Kaela Griswold, member of the winning team 5 Star, said: “It was a real privilege to raise both funds and awareness for the esteemed Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity here in London. To have the opportunity to make a tangible impact, as part of our studies, is truly a special experience we will never forget.”

About the project, Dr Spinder Dhaliwal, Reader in Entrepreneurship and module leader Entrepreneurial Mindset and Opportunities Creation module, said: “I was immensely proud of the hard work and enthusiasm of the students this semester. They tackled the charity fund raising challenge with relish using their business acumen, creativity and resilience.”
