The University of Westminster hosted its fourth What it Takes event of the 2023-24 series, where students and recent graduates had the opportunity to listen to an online panel of alumni discussing the current perception of artificial intelligence (AI) in society and the potential challenges it poses.

The event, titled What it Takes to Unlock the Potential of AI, was organised by the Alumni Relations Office and was attended by 71 Westminster colleagues, students and recent graduates who heard from a panel of alumni who offered insights following their own experiences of working with AI.

The panellists included Communication MA alumna Yasmina Kazitani, the current Chief Marketing Officer for AI and gaming Web3 platform, Interverse AI. Also participating in the discussion was Data Technology and AI expert Alberto Rey Villaverde, who graduated from the Data Mining MSc course in 2011, who recommended many resources to those interested in the subject of AI. The panel was completed by Dr Doug Specht, Assistant Head of the School of Media and Communication at Westminster.

Following the talk, which took place on 23 November, a Q&A session was held, led by panel chair Gunter Saunders, Associate Director for Digital Engagement at the University of Westminster.

Talking about the event, one audience member said: ‘‘Of all AI related events I've listened to recently this was the best by far. This was thought provoking, enjoyable but also informative and practical. No one can expect definitive answers or predictions, but the panel didn't pretend to be able to do that. They also somehow improved my grasp of things and gave me possible frameworks to think about what I want to think about and further research.’’

James Huke, Alumni Officer at the University of Westminster, added: “I would like to say a huge thank to the panel for sharing their thoughts on the trending topic of AI. It was a very open and engaging talk with lots of great advice. Thank you also to Gunter for hosting and managing the many questions that came in during the Q&A session.”

The What it Takes event series features exciting and innovative alumni speakers sharing their experience and advice on a range of topics, including employability, personal and professional development. More events will be announced soon.
