Jointly organised by the Westminster Development Policy Network and Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT), this event brought together experts to explore different approaches to economic development across three transition economies – China, Poland and Uzbekistan - at the historic Regent Street Cinema on 22 June 2023.

The event began with opening remarks from Bakhrom Mirkasimov, Rector of WIUT, the University of Westminster’s partner university in Uzbekistan.

The evening’s speakers included Begzod Djalilov from the Asian Development Bank, Professor Tomasz Mickiewicz from Aston University, and Professor Markus Taube from University of Duisburg Essen.

They shared their insights around the three transition economies and explored issues such as how to expand social protection to low-income households to cushion the adverse impact of inflation triggered by structural reforms, how to ensure stable and inclusive growth while reforming state-owned enterprises, and the costs and benefits of the rise of state-owned banks.

Following the discussion, Professor Peter Bonfield, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Westminster, provided closing remarks before guests were invited to a drinks reception.

Speaking about the event, Dr Karen Jackson, Reader in Economics and Assistant Head of School of Organisations, Economy and Society, said: “This jointly organised research event builds on more than 20 years of the University’s partnership with Westminster International University in Tashkent. We look forward to working together on many more research activities over the coming years.”
