The University of Westminster partnered with Social Enterprise UK to host a major social entrepreneurship event at Zone29, the University’s new home for careers and enterprise.

Held on 13 May, the event was led by Social Business Founder, Investor and Coach Peter Ptashko, with support from the Research Centre on Peripheral Populations co-directors Professor of Social Enterprise Lilian Miles and Reader in Social Innovation Dr Maria Granados and WeNetwork, the event brought together a diverse group of social entrepreneurs to network and share their experiences.
The panel featured Moud Goba from Micro Rainbow, Flora Edmiston from The Washing Machine Project, Alessandra LoTufo Alonso from Women in Travel, and Westminster alumna and Práxeis Café Founder Mikeila Anderson.
Around 50 social enterprises attended, alongside students and researchers from the Westminster Business School.
Dr Granados said: "It was fantastic to see so many social enterprises, practitioners and researchers in the room, and especially encouraging to hear such open and honest conversations about the realities of the sector, from employee wellbeing and burnout, to scaling challenges, impact investment, collaboration and long-term sustainability. For me, one of the most valuable aspects was seeing the genuine interest in building stronger relationships between our University and social enterprises beyond one-off events!"
Mikeila said: "I found the experience incredibly valuable. It was inspiring to be in a room full of people who understand the realities of creating social impact and the challenges and opportunities that come with an entrepreneurial journey. Networking with individuals who have been at a similar stage to where I am now, as well as those aspiring to become entrepreneurs, led to meaningful conversations, potential collaborations and valuable new connections.
“One aspect of the event that was particularly refreshing was the discussion around founder and business owner's wellbeing. Throughout my entrepreneurial journey, burnout has been a very real challenge as I am balancing multiple responsibilities, have supported others and at times neglected my own wellbeing. Hearing others openly share similar experiences was both reassuring and relieving. The event has increased my confidence as an entrepreneur, reinforced the importance of building a supportive community and reminded me that sustainable impact begins with taking care of ourselves as well as those we serve.
“I am incredibly grateful to the University of Westminster, Zone29 and Social Enterprise UK for creating such a meaningful and inspiring event."
