Launched a year ago by the Freelancer Club in collaboration with the University of Westminster, the programme provides individuals with free business training and support to help them succeed in their freelance journey.

The #RiseFreelancer initiative came about in response to a report highlighting that 20% of freelancers fail within their first year. Since its launch it has provided access to free business training and support to over 200,000 people.

Kareena Ravaliya, a Graphic Design BA Honours alumna, was one of nine Westminster students and recent graduates to join the programme. During the year, she gained vital skills and knowledge to help achieve her goal of becoming a freelance Graphic Designer, from setting up as a sole trader to understanding how build her client portfolio.

As a freelance Graphic Designer Kareena has been involved in multiple projects, including designing the logo for Harrow County Council. The new branding incorporates an updated version of the Borough’s civic coat of arms, which has been rejuvenated to reflect Harrow’s rich and diverse place in the 21st century, while acknowledging its rich heritage.

Kareena is joined by a quarter of a million people who have been given support on their freelance journey since it started a year ago. Now, along with the University of Westminster, the initiative has more than 60 universities, social enterprises, organisations and charities that have committed their support. The Freelancer Club hopes to push this progress further, by aiming to offer free business support and coaching to one million people by 2026.

About the programme Kareena said: “The programme has enabled me to understand the best way to help leverage my freelance career. By doing this, I’ve been challenged to combine both my design and business skills; most importantly I’ve understood the functionality of keeping a successful freelance business.”

Clelia Bevillard, Senior Student Enterprise Manager at WeNetwork, added: “The Rise Freelancer campaign is a successful example of a collaborative initiative which reflects the growing demand for dedicated expert support in self-employment and freelancing skills. This enables those in self-employment to thrive in developing their business activity while also benefiting a broad range of organisations in having successful work partnerships with self-employed hires.”
