University of Westminster’s Fashion Department launches student-led micro marketing agency

The University of Westminster’s Fashion Department has successfully launched its own student-led micro marketing agency, following funding secured through the University’s Talent Bank initiative. The programme enabled three students to undertake paid work experience within the department’s Marketing Team, reflecting Westminster’s commitment to career support and real-world learning.

Three students from different courses within the Fashion Department have been offered paid roles in its newly established Marketing Team for the second semester of the academic year. Their role is to support and enhance marketing activity across all fashion courses, strengthening visibility, amplifying student and colleague achievements, and promoting the breadth of innovation taking place within the department.

By offering paid positions, the team ensured equitable access to the opportunity, enabling all students to apply regardless of personal circumstances. The successful candidates are now gaining hands-on experience in campaign planning, content development, strategic communication and cross-course collaboration, enhancing their professional readiness.

Meeting once a week, the team works under the guidance of a marketing specialist who provides professional advice while allowing students to take ownership of live projects. This initiative reflects the University’s continued commitment to embedding enterprise and real-world learning into the student experience.

The initiative is funded by Westminster’s Talent Bank, which is a student member scheme part of the University’s Zone29 career and enterprise support offering. Talent Bank gives students the opportunity to apply for part-time paid roles across the University, thanks to funding from the Quintin Hogg Trust.

About the programme Fashion Business Management MA student Yara Haddadi, said: “What’s been really enlightening is seeing how all the different fashion courses connect. My course gives me a strong foundation, but working across all the departments has added another dimension. I can see how the creative side and the business side feed into each other. It’s a perspective that really complements what we’re learning on our courses.”

Sammiya Morshed, Fashion Marketing and Promotion BA Honours student, added: “Reaching out to alumni and hearing their stories has been one of the highlights. It’s given me confidence in approaching industry professionals, which is a skill I’ll take with me long after this project. The whole experience has felt like working in a real agency, with real deadlines, real audiences and real impact.”

Jiyoung (Sophie) Yoon, Fashion Business Management BA Honours student, said: “None of this would have been possible without the support of the University of Westminster Talent Bank, which has funded our roles and made it possible for us to do this work alongside our studies. It’s the kind of opportunity that bridges the gap between what you learn on your course and what the industry actually expects, and we’re making the most of every bit of it.”

This initiative directly contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4: Quality Education and 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. Since 2019, the University of Westminster has used the SDGs holistically to frame strategic decisions to help students and colleagues fulfil their potential and contribute to a more sustainable, equitable and healthier society.
