The Careers and Employability Service hosted a group of Goldman Sachs volunteers at the University’s Marylebone Campus for a special Careers Day on Wednesday 22 November.

The company volunteers shared their insights and career paths with students from the Business School. The event started with a panel discussion hosted by Careers and Employability Service Manager Tracey Wells. Over the course of 90 minutes, the panel covered a wide range of topics, including their journeys into financial services. The key message to Westminster students was to take advantage of every opportunity presented to them, even if they may not perfectly align with your ultimate career goal; career paths take unexpected routes.

Volunteers also talked to students about the skills needed for success in Goldman Sachs roles, from listening and organisation skills to a willingness to learn. They explained that enthusiasm and proactivity must start early and encouraged students to show their interest in developing their career and in the financial sector through work experience, event attendance, networking and by making use of the Careers and Employability Service.

After the panel discussion, students had the opportunity to pose questions to the speakers on what differentiates Goldman Sachs from their competitors. Students were also invited to join small group discussions with the Goldman Sachs volunteers, where they were able to discuss questions on a more personal basis and hear from the employees about their careers and roles in more detail. The room was buzzing with conversation, and networking continued long after the event officially drew to a close.

Tracey Wells said: “Thanks to all the volunteers from Goldman Sachs, and the enthusiasm of our Westminster students, the Goldman Sachs Careers event was a great success! The panel were engaging and shared excellent advice and tips, and the small break-out groups ensured that our students had individual questions answered and received tailored support from the volunteers. We look forward to further collaboration in the future.”
