The article discusses the first Marvel films which are set to be released following the ban and speculates as to the reasons why the Chinese government – which has given no explanation for the lifting of the ban - has decided to allow their release in cinemas, including changes in diplomatic relations between the US and China.

Speaking about what he thinks might lie behind the lifting of the ban, Dr Ng said: “While there are signs that China will improve ties with the US in 2023 despite continuing tensions, a more tolerant stance towards crowd-puller and innocuous Marvel films can contribute to post-pandemic recovery, which is currently in line with the party-state’s agenda.”

Dr Ng has also previously spoken to The Guardian about what is behind the ending of the film Fight Club being altered for Chinese audiences and the reasons why Chinese film fans are turning their backs on Hollywood films.
