Dr Filippo Marchetti, Senior Lecturer in International Law and Technology at the University of Westminster’s Law School, was recently invited to give a keynote talk at Satellite Evolution Group's flagship Strategies in Satellite Ground Segment 2026 conference, the world’s only conference focused exclusively on the technologies and infrastructure that enable satellites to communicate with Earth.

Held on 30 September, the conference brought together global satellite industry leaders, technology experts and connectivity innovators to explore the future of satellite communications, share insights on emerging trends and examine the opportunities and challenges facing the satellite sector.
Dr Marchetti’s talk focused on the strategic importance of satellite communications, where he explored their global reach and their role in both civilian and defence applications. He also discussed the importance of international and national law, as well as the need for industry and universities to work together to drive innovation, inform policymaking and support the future development of satellite technologies.
Dr Marchetti also highlighted a forthcoming report by the International Institute of Space Law (IISL) on the international law aspects of interplanetary internet. The project demonstrates how academic research can shape policy, support the development of legal frameworks and influence the practices of stakeholders across the sector.
About the talk, Dr Marchetti said: "It was a pleasure to speak at the conference about the strategic importance of satellite communications and the need for closer collaboration between universities and industry. By working together, we can drive innovation, inform policymaking and help shape the future of the global space sector."
Dr Marchetti's work directly contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure. Since 2019, the University of Westminster has used the SDGs holistically to frame strategic decisions to help students and colleagues fulfil their potential and contribute to a more sustainable, equitable and healthier society.
