Dr Aidan Hehir, Reader in International Relations, recently held a launch event in Pristina, Kosovo for his book ‘Kosovo and Transitional Justice’ where he met with Kosovo’s prime minister Albin Kurti to discuss his research.

Aidan Hehir talking at Kosovo book launch

The book launch, held at Sonder in Pristina on 13 September, welcomed a well-attended audience of civil society activists, politicians, academics, and journalists. Dr Aidan Hehir and Furtuna Sheremeti, co-author and PhD researcher at the Leuven Institute of Criminology, discussed the book at the event, which was followed by a dedicated Q&A session where they covered a variety of topics including the impact of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers on societal stability in Kosovo, and ways in which people in Kosovo can engage more with issues related to transitional justice.

Both Dr Hehir and Sheremeti were invited to meet with the Prime Minister of Kosovo Albin Kurti the following day at the Office of the Prime Minister, where they discussed the book and the government’s new initiative on transitional justice.

Dr Hehir’s new book, titled Kosovo and Transitional Justice, analyses efforts to achieve justice in Kosovo for victims of crimes committed during the 1990s and the broader debates on transitional justice. It investigates the nature and impact of the various mechanisms employed to date in Kosovo to determine their effects within the country and their broader international significance.

The new publication has already received a number of endorsements. John Braithwaite, Criminologist and Professor at Australian National University, said: “…The contributors have deep knowledge and sophistication about what kind of justice Kosovo’s victims received and the implications of this for the most central debates about the character of transitional justice. I thought I knew a bit about conflict in Kosovo, but learned so much that was new by reading this book. Those who engage with it will see more clearly how profound are the paradoxes of transitional justice.”

Talking about the launch, Dr Aidan Hehir said: “It was a great honour to launch 'Kosovo and Transitional Justice' in Pristina and to meet with many of those directly involved in this issue at the launch. Our book is the first in-depth analysis of the attempts made thus far to implement transitional justice in Kosovo; given the contemporary importance of this issue we are confident that our book will have a significant impact on academic and policy-orientated debates going forward. We were particularly pleased to meet with Albin Kurti the Prime Minister of Kosovo to discuss the book and the government's new initiative to implement a transitional justice programme in Kosovo.”
