LGBTQ+ rights in foreign policy and diplomatic practice during times of homophobic backlash

Date 27 May 2026
Time 3 - 4:30pm
Location Online

This panel brings together academics and practitioners to discuss developments in LGBTQ+ rights advocacy in foreign policy, international institutions and diplomatic practice. The second Trump Presidency has seen rapid reversals in LGBTQ+ rights commitments and large scale US development funding cuts have been mirrored by other Global North states. Formal commitments to LGBTQ+ rights in foreign policy has long been inconsistent and not always reflected by diplomatic practice on the ground. In particular, the panel will discuss issues highlighted in the recently published LGBTQ+ Rights Foreign Policy and Diplomacy Toolkit: A Report on Diplomatic Practice in South Africa along with the emerging challenges, prospects and priorities for LGBTQ+ advocacy in times of homophobic backlash and policy rollback.
