Westminster students were selected to present at the 5th annual London Student Sustainability Conference on Monday 20 February 2023. The student-led Conference offered a platform to London-based students from ten universities to showcase their UN Sustainable Development Goals-related work and collaborate with one another.

Logistics and Supply Chain Management MSc students Sarala Ireddy and Trinh Viet Thi (Thi) were selected to present their talk Sustainability: A Retail Versus Freight Perspective to a live audience. Their presentation explored the efforts two major UK-based companies, Tesco and DHL, in the retail and freight industries respectively, have undertaken to implement sustainable business practices.
They showed the audience the similarity and differences between the two companies’ approaches and evaluated how closely their sustainable business practices aligned to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Sarala and Thi said: “Attending the London Student Sustainability Conference 2023 held at King's College London was definitely a highlight of our year spent as Master’s students. We were honoured to be selected as one of the handful of speakers who would present their work. We also had the opportunity to present our poster, which examined how London’s retail and freight sectors could become greener, alongside a terrific group of students.

“We really enjoyed the process of preparing and delivering the talk. The seminars we attended were incredibly motivating and inspiring. They covered a variety of subjects from a sustainable method of harvesting wheat to a game created to inform local communities about food sustainability.

“Attending the conference helped us discover the incredible climate and sustainability work and research being undertaken by students across London. We would like to acknowledge Professor Jacques Leonardi for encouraging us to participate in the Conference and for providing us with assistance throughout the entire preparation process for the presentation.”

Westminster students Abdiqani Osman, Felix Karrlein and Vittoria Vecchiato also presented posters at the Conference.

Katherine Bojczuk, Head of Sustainability at Westminster, said: “It’s great to see Westminster students taking a lead on sustainability issues and collaborating with other Universities as part of this Conference.

“The University of Westminster is committed to embedding sustainable practises in our teaching, research and operations and engagement with these students will be so important for us in championing sustainability and creating positive change over the coming years.”
