Earth Day, celebrated on 22 April, highlights support for sustainability and climate awareness. This year’s theme is ‘Our Power, Our Planet’ and focuses on everyday actions for a sustainable future.

Sustainability at Westminster
Sustainable Development is one of the top three priorities at Westminster and sustainability is embedded into all teaching, learning and operations. The University is committed to lowering its environmental impact and supporting students and staff in making meaningful, sustainable choices.
Across all campuses, work is being done to improve energy efficiency, expand sustainable facilities and integrate sustainability into curriculum and research wherever possible.
What you can do on Earth Day
Earth Day is a reminder that sustainability is for everyone. Here are a few simple habits to try this month:
- Choose reusables – did you know you get a 25p discount off coffee when you use a reusable cup at campus cafes? Make sure you bring a reusable water bottle to campus and fill up at our hydration stations.
- Reduce food waste – try using TooGoodToGo at campus cafés and make sure to use food waste bins on campus to recycle food scraps.
- Cycle to (or between) campuses – you can request use of a bike locker from the Sustainability team. Consider trying a hire bike if you don’t have your own.
- Donate clothes using on-site clothes bins at Harrow and Marylebone.
- Support biodiversity – join our Growing Space Group gardening group by getting in touch with the Sustainability team. If you’d like to establish your own biodiversity group, the Sustainability team can also offer guidance and support.
- Save energy – switch off lights and electronic devices when not in use.
Come to our gardening session
Ready to take some action? This laid-back gardening session on 29 April is a perfect place to start.
In this session, we will be sowing seeds for herbs, spring vegetables and flowering plants. We will be refreshing the beds and giving our planters some much needed love before the start of Summer.
To sign up, please visit the April gardening session event page.
