Would you like to learn Swedish in London? Join one of our part-time Swedish courses at our central London Regent Street Campus – just a few minutes' walk from Oxford Circus.

Our beginners’ Swedish courses (Grade 1) start in October and January. If you already have some knowledge of Swedish you can also join part 2 or part 3 of the Beginners’ Swedish (Grade 1) course.

We also have intermediate Swedish classes starting in October each year.

Who is this class for?

Swedish Beginners’ (Grade 1) is the first exposure to the language, allowing you to start to communicate.

  • Part 1 is for you if you have no or little previous knowledge of Swedish.
  • You can join Part 2 if you have studied Swedish for about 20 hours.
  • You can join Part 3 if you will have studied Swedish for about 40 hours.

Course content

Our Swedish lessons follow a communicative approach to language teaching, focusing on the language you need to communicate in authentic situations with an emphasis on speaking and listening. Our evening classes are taught by experienced language teachers who are native speakers of the language or equivalent.

Term 1

In this term, we will cover:

  • greetings
  • countries and languages
  • classroom phrases
  • professions and family
  • numbers
  • time
  • daily routines
  • instructions

Grammar

You will learn:

  • the Swedish alphabet and pronunciation
  • definite and indefinite articles
  • verbs in the present tense
  • cardinal numbers
  • verbs in imperative
  • personal pronouns, subject position
  • question words
  • word order
  • nouns – singular, indefinite and definite form

Term 2

Topics

In this term, we will cover:

  • shopping
  • hobbies and interests
  • entertainment
  • films and television
  • family, friends and relatives
  • famous people

Grammar

You will learn:

  • auxiliary verbs and verbs in infinitive
  • nouns – plural, indefinite form
  • adverbs for frequency
  • particle verb (tycker om)
  • word order
  • adjectives, indefinite form
  • verbs in the past tense
  • personal pronouns, object form
  • some time expressions for the past tense
  • relative pronoun (som)
  • possessive pronouns
  • pronunciation

Term 3

Topics

In this term, we will cover:

  • more on shopping

  • colours
  • travel and tourism
  • weather and dates
  • holiday

  • Sweden and the Swedes

Grammar

You will learn:

  • indefinite pronouns (någon, något, några; ingen, inget, inga)
  • nouns – plural, definite form
  • adjectives, comparative form
  • verbs in supine
  • numbers, ordinal
  • verbs – present perfect and past tense
  • adverbs for position and destination
  • more auxiliary verbs
  • prepositions for past tense and future tense
  • word order
  • pronunciation

There may be slight content variations at the discretion of the tutor. We may, for example, include additional content when general progress is good, or vary content according to students' interests.

We will use Rivstart A1+A2 throughout the course. However, please wait until the first session before buying your course books. We will also use the tutor's own materials.

Who is this class for?

This level of Swedish is post-beginner, allowing you to extend your range of basic skills.

  • Part 1 is for you if you have already studied the Swedish language for approximately one year or 60 hours.
  • You can join Part 2 if you have studied Swedish for about 80 hours.
  • You can join Part 3 if you will have studied Swedish for about 100 hours.

  • day-to-day life at work, telephone calls and emails

  • news and current affairs

Who is this class for?

You should have a good basic knowledge of the Swedish language and its grammar.

  • Part 1 is for you if you have already studied the Swedish language for approximately two years or 120 hours or equivalent.
  • You can join Part 2 if you have studied Swedish for about 140 hours.
  • You can join Part 3 if you will have studied Swedish for about 160 hours.
