Would you like to learn Swedish in London? Join one of our part-time Swedish courses at our central London Regent Street Campus – just a few minutes' walk from Oxford Circus.

Our beginner Swedish courses start in October and January. If you already have some knowledge of Swedish you can also join part 2 or part 3 of the Beginner Swedish course.

We also have intermediate Swedish classes starting in October each year.

Who is this class for?

Swedish Beginner is the first exposure to the language, allowing you to start to communicate.

  • Part 1 is for you if you have no or little previous knowledge of Swedish.
  • You can join Part 2 if you have studied Swedish for about 20 hours.
  • You can join Part 3 if you will have studied Swedish for about 40 hours.

You can book:

  • each part individually for £235 (£260 after 16 September)
  • all three parts together for £530 (£585 after 16 September)*

Course content

Our Swedish lessons follow a communicative approach to language teaching, focusing on the language you need to communicate in authentic situations with an emphasis on speaking and listening. Our evening classes are taught by experienced language teachers who are native speakers of the language or equivalent.

Part 1

Topics

In this term, we will cover:

  • greetings
  • countries and languages
  • professions and family
  • numbers
  • time and daily routines
  • instructions

Grammar

You will learn:

  • the Swedish alphabet and pronunciation
  • verbs in imperative and present tense (sitt!/sitter, stå/står, läs!/läser)
  • cardinal numbers
  • personal pronouns, subject position (jag, du, vi)
  • question words (vad, var, varifrån)
  • word order
  • nouns – singular, indefinite and definite form (en hund-hunden, ett bord-bordet)

Part 2

Topics

In this term, we will cover:

  • shopping
  • hobbies and interests
  • entertainment
  • films and television
  • family, friends and relatives
  • famous people

Grammar

You will learn:

  • auxiliary verbs and verbs in infinitive and past tense (kan, att skriva, skrev)
  • nouns – plural, indefinite form (hundar, bord)
  • adverbs for frequency (ofta, alltid, aldrig)
  • adjectives, indefinite form (en rolig film, ett roligt program, roliga filmer)
  • personal pronouns, object form (mig, dig, oss)
  • relative pronoun (som)
  • possessive pronouns (min/mitt/mina, din/ditt/dina)

Part 3

Topics

In this term, we will cover:

  • more on shopping
  • clothes and colours
  • travel and tourism
  • weather and dates
  • travel and transport
  • directions
  • Sweden and the Swedes

Grammar

You will learn:

  • indefinite pronouns (någon, något, några; ingen, inget, inga)
  • nouns – plural, definite form (hundarna, flickorna, borden)
  • adjectives, comparative form (billig, billigare, billigast)
  • verbs in supine (pratat, ringt, köpt)
  • numbers, ordinal
  • adverbs for position and destination (hemma/hem)
  • prepositions for past tense and future tense (för en vecka sedan, om fem minuter)

There may be slight content variations at the discretion of the tutor. We may, for example, include additional content when general progress is good, or vary content according to students' interests.

We will use Rivstart A1+A2 throughout the course. However, please wait until the first session before buying your course books. We will also use the tutor's own materials.

Who is this class for?

This level of Swedish is post-beginner, allowing you to extend your range of basic skills.

  • Part 1 is for you if you have already studied the Swedish language for approximately one year or 60 hours.
  • You can join Part 2 if you have studied Swedish for about 80 hours.
  • You can join Part 3 if you will have studied Swedish for about 100 hours.

  • day-to-day life at work, telephone calls and emails

You will learn:

  • adjectives, indefinite and definite form (en grön bil/den gröna bilen/den här gröna bilen/min gröna bil)
  • verbs (sitter, ligger, står)
  • adverbs (tråkig, lugnt, vacker)
  • prepositions for frequency (om dagen, i veckan)
  • revision

Who is this class for?

You should have a good basic knowledge of the Swedish language and its grammar.

  • Part 1 is for you if you have already studied the Swedish language for approximately two years or 120 hours or equivalent.
  • You can join Part 2 if you have studied Swedish for about 140 hours.
  • You can join Part 3 if you will have studied Swedish for about 160 hours.

  • verbs in all tenses, including present and perfect participle (en skuren potatis)
  • adjectives (comparateion: fin, finare, finast)
  • passive verbs (göras, görs, gjordes, gjorts)

Who is this class for?

You have a solid intermediate knowledge of the Swedish language and its grammar, and can communicate confidently and fluently in most everyday situations.

  • Part 1 is for you if you have already studied Swedish for three years or 180 hours.
  • You can join Part 2 if you have studied Swedish for about 200 hours.
  • You can join Part 3 if you will have studied Swedish for about 220 hours.
