John Zhang is a qualified Architect who runs his own small scale studio, prior to this he was an associate at DSDHA Architects, having completed a number of award winning buildings, including London 2012 Athletes Village Housing, and Alex Monroe Studio, a bespoke jewellery workshop and boutique in Southwark, which has won an RIBA award in 2014.
John Zhang studied architecture at Cambridge University and the Royal College of Art, winning the Conran Foundation Design Award and the Will Alsop Award for Urbanism for his Master’s design thesis.
As a Lecturer at the University of Westminster, John runs a 3rd Year BA Architectural Design Studio in conjunction with the Central Academy of Fine Arts in China, exploring novel ideas of housing design to address global questions.
John has a strong research interest in the conditions of contemporary Chinese architectural practice, particularly the relationship between foreign and Chinese architects in the contemporary setting. He has recently completed a PhD at the Royal College of Art on this topic funded under the AEDAS Scholarship.
John is currently developing research to examine conditions of rural renewal and the status of cultural infrastructure in a rapidly post-industrial China.
