The Guild of Entrepreneurs is a Guild of the City of London aiming to promote excellence in the profession of Entrepreneurship. It comprises leading entrepreneurs and its Master, Lee Robertson who founded Investment firm Quorum, is one of the UK's most successful wealth managers.
Earlier this year Dr David Dunkley Gyimah and the Guild’s Head of Education, Nicola Manning, launched a unique mentoring programme which brought in a number of Guild members to coach Digital and Interactive Storytelling LAB MA students for a few weeks.
The Guild of Entrepreneurs provided real-world experience for students by encouraging them to critically assess the strength and weaknesses of their ideas, to consider financial strategies and covering production and the right market for their projects. In the process students also learned how to produce an industry-ready treatment, to position their project within the current market, assess its cost, its business model and promotion strategy.
In his speech, David took the opportunity to thank the Guild for their involvement as mentors to students from the disLAB course. He went on to talk about the importance of understanding storytelling in a wider context, and as opposed to journalism, documentary making or PR.
He reminded the audience that storytelling embraces behavioural and neuroscience, which is now fed into the Digital and Interactive Storytelling LAB MA. Finally, he touched on the value of diversity in strengthening the creativity of teams, and the importance of discarding monomyths and singular narratives that often skew a wider truth.
Speaking about being invited at the Banquet, Dr Gyimah said: “It was a huge honour to be invited to give the keynote to an illustrious group of professionals from all walks of life. What unites them is they're all successful entrepreneurs. They were highly receptive and I felt we'd opened a new chapter in collaborating - that is business and the art of storytelling. We're looking forward to working together again next year.”
