This global distinction was awarded during the Academy’s 14th Annual Colloquium held in Oslo. The prize committee recognised Professor Philippopoulos-Mihalopoulos's experimental, multidisciplinary approach to learning and teaching of environmental law that combines legal knowledge with theoretical perspectives, interdisciplinary understandings of environmental law and personal experiences.

The IUCN Academy of Environmental Law Education Awards recognise significant and diverse contributions to education and learning on environmental law. Such contributions include teaching specialised courses to undergraduate and graduate students, delivering clinical programmes that expose students to the practice of environmental law, and supervising students who are undertaking advanced research in Master's and PhD programmes.
