Westminster Finance students visit iFAST Global Bank to gain international insight into financial sector

Westminster students from the Investment and Financial Risk Management MSc course recently visited iFAST Global Bank, a virtual bank listed in Singapore and based in the UK. The visit, led by Dr Jason Cheng, Senior Lecturer in the School of Finance and Accounting, provided opportunities for students to broaden their horizons in the banking industries and give them ideas about their careers after university.

The visit offered students an inspiring look into the inner workings of a modern digital bank. From engaging conversations with industry professionals to an immersive exploration of workplace culture, the experience provided a glimpse into the fast-paced world of financial services and what it takes to thrive in it.

By walking through the dynamic and collaborative workspaces, students witnessed firsthand how the various teams, from operations to compliance, interact and contribute to the bank’s missions.

During the visit key members of senior management delivered presentations highlighting their mission to deliver seamless digital banking services that combine technology and a strong focus on customers. One of the highlights of the session was an introduction to the concept of risk management adopted by the bank. Students were introduced to the tools and frameworks used by iFAST to identify, assess and mitigate financial and operational risks. These insights underscored how essential strategic planning and compliance are in maintaining a resilient financial institution, especially in an increasingly digital and regulated environment.

Employees also shared stories and examples that reflected the bank’s strong emphasis on work-life balance, inclusivity and employee wellbeing. Students learned about various colleague engagement activities, wellness programmes and the collaborative spirit.

This was followed by a Q&A run by senior management from various departments. The informal discussion gave students the opportunity to ask practical questions, ranging from job application advice to day-to-day responsibilities, while receiving honest and thoughtful answers from those working at the heart of the organisation, bridging the gap between classroom theory and real-world banking.

Dr Jason Cheng said: “Students left the trip with not just knowledge, but perspective. The visit painted a holistic picture of what a career in finance could look like and provided meaningful context to the evolving landscape of digital banking. It also highlighted the importance of adaptability, communication and continuous learning in the workplace.”

Reflecting on the experience, student Vahnika Batchu said: “The visit was an incredibly enriching experience that helped bridge the gap between academic learning and the realities of the financial industry. It gave me a clearer understanding of how banks operate, the importance of risk management and the value of a strong workplace culture. I am especially grateful to the University for providing such opportunities, which not only enhance our learning but also build the confidence and connections needed to navigate our career paths. This visit, along with the University’s continuous support, has played a key role in helping me secure a job and prepare for the next chapter of my professional journey.”

The educational visit directly contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education.
