The University of Westminster has collaborated with RIFT Social Enterprise to deliver a five-day workshop aimed at empowering entrepreneurs from marginalised communities. After learning skills and building their confidence, participants had the opportunity to pitch their business ideas to Westminster Honorary Doctorate and businessman Levi Roots.

The University of Westminster opened its doors to aspiring entrepreneurs from 4 – 8 August for the Empowering Entrepreneurs workshop, a five-day educational programme dedicated to self-employment. The course featured a range of sessions delivered by expert trainers from RIFT Social Enterprise, a non-profit organisation providing tailored self-employment support to individuals from marginalised communities.
The workshop kicked off with an introduction to the world of business, which allowed the cohort to understand the pros and cons of self-employment, identify a target audience and choose the right place to work. Trainers also discussed mental health in self-employment and the importance of wellbeing when running a business.
Day two moved onto business plans, cashflow forecasts and market research, which aimed to provide a full understanding of how to complete necessary documents and their requirement for accessing funding. The trainers also showcased how to undertake primary and secondary research and the benefits and considerations of each.
Sessions on day three focused on the legal and funding aspects of setting up a business, with sessions discussing taxes, National Insurance and VAT, as well as the different company types, such as not-for-profit organisations and charities. Participants developed an understanding of funding types, the difference between loans and grants, the application process and useful resources.
The fourth day showcased the importance of branding, marketing and social media for small businesses. Attendees were taught how to build a brand identity, logo creation, different content types, how to source tenders and bid writing, before learning social media essentials such as how to use the right platform, content, hashtags and more for the audience and business.
The workshop culminated with a final session on networking, before being taught how to deliver the perfect sales pitch. Participants then had the opportunity to pitch their business ideas in a Dragons Den-style event to a panel of experts featuring Westminster Honorary Doctorate and entrepreneur Levi Roots alongside the CEO of RIFT Social Enterprise, Andy Gullick.

All participants then received a certificate of completion to mark the end of the course and to recognise their new skills and connections made throughout the week.
About the workshop one participant Mel said: "This free workshop was an incredible opportunity for us as entrepreneurs. It allowed us to test our product in a supportive environment, connect with business owners and gain valuable feedback. The chance to pitch our ideas and even go live during lunchtime to sell our products was a unique experience that not only boosted our confidence but also expanded our network. As entrepreneurs, it’s tough to find affordable spaces to test our ideas, and the risk of failure often feels too high. But this program offered a low-cost, high-impact way to try things out and receive professional insights. The creativity and hands-on experience were key elements that really set this workshop apart. I'm urging others to continue supporting initiatives like this—programs that make a real difference by offering us a chance to grow and succeed, especially when business challenges are so high."
Levi Roots said: “At the Empowering Entrepreneurs event at the University of Westminster, I saw people turn their passions into powerful business ideas. When you mix belief, creativity and the right guidance, you can truly slay the dragons holding you back. Thank you for inviting me to play a small part in the overall success of this course; it was my pleasure and privilege to participate”
Andy Gullick, Chief Executive of RIFT Social Enterprise, added: “Watching someone find their voice, grow in confidence and take the first steps towards building their own future is why we do this. Entrepreneurship changes lives, not just for the individual, but for families and communities too.”
Jordan Scammell, Head of Development and Fundraising at Westminster, said: "This partnership between the University of Westminster and RIFT Social Enterprise has given entrepreneurs the chance to test ideas, gain real-world insights and build valuable connections. A huge thank you to our Honorary Doctorate Levi Roots, Patron of RIFT Social Enterprise, for joining us on the final day to share his journey and provide invaluable feedback to our entrepreneurs who bravely pitched. This program wouldn't be possible without the funding that makes these opportunities accessible, helping entrepreneurs grow, succeed and overcome the challenges they face.”
