On 29 November, Law LLB Honours alumnus Spencer Collins won the award for General Counsel of the Year at the British Legal Awards 2023. In their 14th year, the awards aim to represent the best of the UK’s legal community. Hosted by English actress and TV presenter Sue Perkins, among the winners were Octopus Energy and Hogan Lovells.

Collins graduated from Westminster in 2006 and has had an extensive career, working for a variety of companies including Allen & Overy, Software Investment Advisors and AUTO1 Group. He is now the Executive Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and Executive Committee Member at the British semiconductor and software design company, Arm.

The role of a General Counsel is to provide in-house legal advice to organisations to help them reduce legal risk and maintain a high standard of legal compliance.

This is not the first award of the year, as he also won General Counsel of the Year this summer at the 2023 Lawyer Awards, which honours lawyers and firms across a variety of areas.

Professor Luke Mason, Head of Westminster Law School, said: “We are really proud of Spencer’s achievement. It’s fantastic to see one of our alumni win a prize for his fantastic work as General Counsel within such a leading and innovative firm. It shows what a great impact our former students are having not only in traditional parts of the legal sector, but also working at the cutting edge of industry. Our professional legal courses and new LLM in Law and Technology reflect our continued commitment to these goals on behalf of our students.”
