Designs from alumni Roger Waters and Nick Mason, the founding band members of iconic rock group Pink Floyd, are currently being exposed at a V&A Pink Floyd exhibition entitled “Pink Floyd: Their Mortal Remains”.

Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Richard Wright studied Architecture between 1962 and 1965 at the Regent Street Polytechnic, former name of the University of Westminster, where they met and decided to form the band. Designs from Waters’s time studying Architecture at Regent Street Polytechnic are currently part of the V&A Pink Floyd exhibition.

The Pink Floyd exhibition has already proved an immediate success among fans, as tickets were sold out for the first three days. The Westminster band’s exhibition has been said to set the rival popularity of successful David Bowie show, which drew more than 300,000 visitors.

Pink Floyd’s time as students at the Regent Street Polytechnic has had a huge influence on the band’s approach to design. In a recent visit to the University of Westminster, when the band unveiled a heritage plaque at Regent Street Campus, Nick Mason said: “Studying at the Regent Street Polytechnic introduced me to some of the key people and biggest collaborators in my career, many of whom I have been lucky enough to work with over the last 50 years. Three of the founding members of Pink Floyd met there so in essence we were formed under the roof of the Polytechnic. We rehearsed in the common room in the basement and played some of our first performances there. Not only did studying Architecture gave us an invaluable introduction to art and technology, but it also gave us an opportunity to develop, through what would now be called a ‘government funded initiative’ but was then called a ‘student grant’.”

Pink Floyd: Their Mortal Remains’ V&A exhibition was launched on 13 May and will be on for 20 weeks.
