Dr Monica Germana, Senior Lecturer in English Literature and Creative Writing, commented on witch characters’ queerness in TV and film for Broadly, Vice’s platform for diversifying stories that aren’t represented or misrepresented by traditional institutions.

The article outlined the ever-existing link between queerness and witches in film and TV shows. Dr Germana commented: “Witchcraft is linked to anti-normative behaviour. Witches are often unmarried, childless women who don’t conform to the conventions of a Christian, family-orientated society.”

Stating that witches outstep gender roles and pose a feminist threat, she described them as “women in control of their own desires and power, which is terrifying to any member of patriarchal society, particularly men”.
