From Tuesday 16 April all University computers will no longer ‘autorun’ programmes and applications whenever you insert your USBs, CDs or DVDs.

Once we have disabled autorun, when you insert a USB, CD or DVD, you will not see a pop up window prompting you to open your files.

To access your files from a USB, or to play CDs and DVDs you will need to:

  1. Go to the Windows ‘Start’ button and select ‘Computer’
  2. Select the USB, CD or DVD that you inserted
  3. Choose the file you wish to open

Your document, presentation, music file or film will then open and run as normal.

Why autorun is being disabled

Disabling the autorun function on all computers will reduce the risk of viruses and other malware infecting University systems and also spreading between users. The University has made this decision as a result of a number of previous incidents of malware infection.
