The University of Westminster has expressed its backing for the proposals for the new North-South and East-West Cycle Superhighways in an open letter sent to Transport for London.

The University of Westminster is a leading education provider with campuses in the heart of London and Harrow and is committed to creating a sustainable, healthy and safe environment for its more than 22,000 students and employees.

Dr Rachel Aldred, author of the ‘Benefits of Investing in Cycling’ report and Senior Lecturer in Transport at the University of Westminster welcomes the University’s support for the two segregated cycle lanes. She said, “My research has analysed the UK's historic under-investment in cycling, and how it still remains marginalised within transport planning, despite substantial health and other benefits. Cycling environments are too often intimidating and/or confusing, and so fail to attract a broad demographic.”

Dr Aldred added, “So it's great to see the University supporting London's new Cycle Superhighway Plans. They are the kind of high-quality, coherent infrastructure we need for cycling to become an option for people of all ages and abilities.”

Professor Roland Dannreuther, Head of CSR and Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, shared the following comments with Transport for London.

The University of Westminster fully supports the ‘Cross Rail for Bikes’ proposals. Sustainability is a key element in the University’s vision for the future and the safety and wellbeing benefits of this world-leading cycling infrastructure are greatly welcomed.

The University of Westminster was founded as Britain's first polytechnic in 1838. Since then it has developed into a university that combines both metropolitan and cosmopolitan dimensions, and which is closely involved in business, professional and academic life within London, as well as overseas.

Like many organisations and businesses in London, a growing number of our over 22,000 students and staff cycle to get to our campuses in the West End and Harrow. An even larger proportion of them would cycle if they felt comfortable and safe on the roads.

We value their safety and we want to promote active lifestyles for all staff and students. We support their freedom to choose how they get to work. We also note strong evidence that more cycling increases spending in local retail businesses and lowers air pollution levels. We would also highlight the compelling evidence given in recent British Cycling report ‘Benefits of Investing in Cycling’ produced by Dr Rachel Aldred, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Westminster.

The proposed north–south and east–west routes will help us attract and retain the students and staff our University needs to continue to thrive. They will also make London a more attractive city and a healthier city for all Londoners, whether they cycle or not.

‘Crossrail for Bikes’ is, on balance, great for our University and for London. Please make sure these plans are delivered, without delay.
