Anastasia Denisova, Lecturer in Journalism at the Westminster School of Media, Arts and Design wrote on the how internet has brought a new dimension to Russian propaganda. 

Writing on Independent Voices, Denisova explained that the “tactic of persuasion” although now taking on a new digital form, dates back to the Russian Revolution in 1917.

“Lenin focused on the masses and their struggles in his posters” says Denisova. “Present-day internet trolls often pretend to speak on behalf of ordinary people.”

Continuing, Denisova writes: “Under the ‘iPad president’ Medvedev, the internet brought a new dimension to Russian propaganda… Staff were hired to pollute the conversations in Russian liberal blogs – leaving multitudes of hateful and meaningless comments.”
