Dr Jonathan Kasstan, Lecturer on the French and Linguistics BA Honours and English Language and Linguistics MA courses, has been featured in The Economist’s ‘Letters to the editor’ section.

Jonathan Kasstan

He wrote in response to the article: ‘Brexit is the ideal moment to make English the EU’s common language’ about the use of multiple languages in the EU.

The article suggests that the EU should use English as its single official language due to Europe growing together politically. It includes a quote from French economist Nicolas Veron, noting that “English is already in effect the working language of the EU.”

Dr Kasstan argued against the point of a single language being beneficial to politics. He said: “Britain and America share a common language and yet the present governments are far apart on reaching a consensus in many policy areas.”
