On 9 October Angela Wright, Sylvia Snyders and Peter Urwin met representatives of the Royal Society to discuss the work we are doing on the Royal Society’s programme, Leading the way: increasing diversity in the scientific workforce. The feedback was very positive, and Angela is doing a great job of leading this project focused in the department of HRM.

This is just one of a number of ongoing contracts that CER staff are involved in, including the ESRC-funded study of social mobility led by Franz Buscha; contracts with HMRC to provide econometric services and a cost benefit analysis for the Dolphin Square foundation, being led by Peter Urwin and Sabine D’Costa. Peter has also recently completed a project for DWP and BIS that considers ways of capturing returns to training for the unemployed.

Much of our work takes place at the research/policy nexus, and in September we brought together over 100 people from the policy, practice and academic worlds to synthesis research, practice and policy in the Managing of Conflict and Resolving of Disputes. The event was an enormous success, with David Lipsky (Cornell), John Forth (NIESR) and Ed Sweeney (Acas) delivering keynotes, and helping to further strengthen the reputation of WBS in this area of research.

On 6 November, Natalia Montnari from Lund University presented her paper on Popularity and Altruism in Children, as part of the CER Seminar series; and over the past few weeks Giorgio Di Pietro’s work on the ERASMUS exchange programme has generated interest, as it suggests that Study abroad programs boost labor market careers.
