Professor John Owens, Professor of United States Government and Politics in the Centre for the Study of Democracy, was quoted in an article by iNews about what the Democrats having control of the US Senate means for Joe Biden.
In the article, Professor John Owens discussed the challenges that Biden might face, and said: “The first big test will be on strengthening the federal government’s control over the COVID crisis and delivering Mr Biden’s promise to provide a more comprehensive pandemic aid package, including a $2,000 stimulus cheque, which [current Senate majority leader Mitch] McConnell has previously resisted, and more extensive financial aid to badly hit state and local governments."
He added: “Even more controversial is Mr Biden’s economic recovery plan, which included tax increases on corporations and wealthy individuals, and a $15 an hour federal minimum wage. Both proposals were opposed by most congressional Republicans who will take full advantage of the Senate filibuster to talk out this legislation.”
