Radio news journalist Helen Catt has been named runner-up for ‘Newsreader of the Year’ at the 2011 Independent Radio News Awards (IRN).

Helen studied on the Master’s in Journalism programme at Harrow campus in 2008-9 and, on completion, was immediately offered a job. Helen presents the news at Spirit FM in Chichester.

The IRN Awards celebrate the best in UK commercial radio news. The winners were announced at a prestigious ceremony in London on 7 March, hosted by Sky News presenter, Charlotte Hawkins.

Jane Whyatt, Senior Lecturer in Journalism at University of Westminster and Helen Catt’s tutor, comments: “Helen showed great commitment whilst she was learning the skills and attributes required to be a promising newsreader in our radio studios at Harrow campus. I am not surprised by her early success and am, of course immensely proud of her!”

Tim Molloy, IRN Managing Director says: “The winners represent the very best in radio journalism; in particular they illustrate what commercial radio news teams can achieve from relatively few resources through their flexibility, work-ethic and commitment to listeners. They are the unsung heroes of commercial radio”.

Helen Catt, added: “The skills that I learnt at the University of Westminster have been a great grounding for me and gave me the training and skills that I needed to pursue a career at Spirit FM. To have been nominated for this award against some incredible names in the business is a real honour. I’ve worked really hard over the last two years and this nomination recognises that.”

The Master’s in Journalism programme is accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council and equips students to work in radio, television and online news.
