FAB FEST is a week-long celebration of design and making culminating in a public festival from 8-9 July presenting live music, entertainment and sustainable design to the public.

FAB FEST will feature over 50 pavilions designed and built by students from the University of Westminster, as well as national and international guest teams, under the guidance and mentoring of experts from academia and professional practice in the field of architecture and the built environment.

The event hosted by the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment and the Fabrication Laboratory at the University of Westminster, will generate an urban festival to start the summer, with family friendly events and activities from 12–4:00pm and an evening event from 6–9:30pm on Saturday 8 July.

Activities will include Pop-Up card making, sketching and a treasure hunt across the pavilions. FAB FEST will also feature live performances from a wide range of bands, including performers from the University of Westminster’s School of Media, Arts and Design.

This year, the FAB FEST theme is ‘Pop-up City’ and will give participants the chance to design and build the cities of tomorrow. Teams are invited to try their hand at shaping the future of how we make, live and celebrate life.

This year’s festival will also feature the Architectural Robotics Theatre. The first performance, created especially for FAB FEST ’17, will see pavilions fabricated on a 7-axis industrial robotic arm. The project will finish with pavilion construction and a week-long performance at the University of Westminster’s ‘shop-window’ overlooking Marylebone Road and Madame Tussaud’s.

FAB FEST will also be featuring a project exploring unusual and ground breaking architectural concepts to inhabit Mars with the department of Computer Science and Engineering in the Faculty of Science and Technology. FAB FEST teams will build an artificial landscape simulating Mars and the surroundings needed to train robots to autonomously navigate and build conditions suitable for human inhabitation.
