Dr David Gaze, Senior Lecturer in Chemical Pathology at the University of Westminster, has been appointed a three-year tenure as the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Annals of Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine, the official peer-reviewed journal of the Association for Laboratory Medicine (LabMed), of which he is Director of Scientific Affairs.
The journal plays a central role in advancing knowledge across all fields of laboratory medicine, publishing research that supports the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of human disease.
Dr Gaze will lead the journal alongside Dr Rav Sodi, Consultant Clinical Biochemist, bringing together their combined editorial experience, scientific expertise and commitment to strengthening the discipline. Their shared ambition is to enhance the journal’s visibility, relevance and reach, both as the house journal for NHS laboratory professionals in the UK and as an influential publication within the global laboratory medicine community.
Dr Gaze’s appointment builds on a distinguished career in clinical biochemistry and chemical pathology. His research focuses on cardiovascular pathology, particularly improving early detection of heart disease through non‑invasive biomarker testing. He has established strong collaborations with NHS hospital trusts, national and international universities and the bioscience industry, contributing to numerous peer‑reviewed publications, including previous work published in Annals of Clinical Biochemistry itself. He is regularly invited to present at scientific meetings and professional conferences and has played a key role in shaping national guidance on cardiac biomarkers through his work with LabMed.
Alongside his research, Dr Gaze is deeply committed to education and professional development. He teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, supervises research projects and supports early‑career scientists through mentorship and training initiatives. His work also contributes to the University of Westminster’s Ageing Biology and Age‑Related Diseases Research Group, which focuses on understanding the biological mechanisms that underlie ageing and age‑associated conditions.

Dr Gaze’s work directly contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3: Good Health and Wellbeing, 4: Quality Education and 17: Partnerships for the Goals. Since 2019, the University of Westminster has used the SDGs holistically to frame strategic decisions to help students and colleagues fulfil their potential and contribute to a more sustainable, equitable and healthier society.
