A research seminar series organised by the Centre for the Study of Democracy (CSD) will begin in February at the University of Westminster, featuring speakers from universities across the UK.

Based in the School of Social Sciences at Westminster, the Centre for the Study of Democracy undertakes research across a range of critical social and political challenges, promoting an interdisciplinary environment that embraces colleagues from politics, international relations, sociology and criminology. 

The seminar series will commence on 8 February online with a seminar from Paola Rivetti from Dublin City University. This seminar will cover revolutionary and counterrevolutionary politics in the Middle East and North Africa, and how these have transformed democracy transnationally.

The seminars will run until 5 April and cover a wide range of topics, including migration, governmentality, the politics of borders and global racial hierarchy.

The series will be divided into five events: 

1. Revolution and counter-revolution in the Middle East and North Africa: Implications for democracy

2. Border abolitionism: Migration, containment and the memory of struggles and rescue

  • Martina Tazzioli, London Goldsmiths, Tuesday 22 February, 4-5.30pm, Westminster Forum, 32-38 Wells Street.

3. The politics of border abolition: Temsula AO and the northeast borderlands of India

  • Nivi Machanda, Queen Mary University, Tuesday 8 March, 4-5.30pm, online.

4. Objectively justified: Racial disparity as the inevitable consequence of criminal injustice  

  • Patrick Williams, Manchester Metropolitan University, Tuesday 22 March, 4-5.30pm, Westminster Forum, 32-38 Wells Street.

5. Global race war: International politics and racial hierarchy 

  • Alexander Barder, Florida International University, Tuesday 5 April, 4-5.30pm, online.
