Dr Mohammed Gulrez Zariwala, Reader in Translational Physiology, wrote an article for STEM Learning UK’s Catalyst magazine on how to improve human nutrition applying nanotechnology.

Talking about the use of nanotechnology in other areas such as clothing and technology, Dr Zariwala said: “As nanoformulations present an appealing means of preserving beneficial characteristics of a substance while enhancing its absorption and potency they hold great potential for human nutrition and health.”

He also described the limitations of extracting natural ‘bioactives’ and explained nanoformulation for human consumption would require the use of food-based ingredients. Giving examples of this, he concluded: “Advancements in the science of nanoformulating bioactives as food supplements may therefore in future provide a novel drug-free approach to counter the progress of modern-day diseases.”
