The Fellowship is aimed at journalists in the middle of their career from South Asian countries including Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. It is run by Professor Jean Seaton and Professor Rosie Thomas from the University of Westminster.

The programme titled ‘Good Governance in a Changing World: the Media, Politics and Society’ involves eight weeks of intensive lectures, visits, and discussions that introduce fellows to significant UK academics, media, and political figures in the field.

Fellows will explore the different ways in which the media play a part in holding democratic processes to account, including government, the civil service and security, as well as the broader political system in both the South Asia region and the UK. In the final week, each fellow will run a symposium on a topic of their choice.

Chevening, founded in 1983, is the British government’s international award scheme aimed at developing global leaders. Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and partner organisations, Chevening offers two types of awards – Chevening Scholarships and Chevening Fellowships – the recipients of which are personally selected by British Embassies and High Commissions around the world through a rigorous selection process.

Speaking about the Fellowship, Professor Jean Seaton said: “The Chevening South Asia Journalism Programme has been fascinating and an honour to run. Bringing mid-career journalists together who cannot otherwise meet across contested borders, it is done by immersing them in the journalism, thinking, great institutions, creativity and challenges of the UK. It is at the cutting edge of the University's historic media department's vision of innovatively relating policy ideas to practical action.

“Professor Thomas and I look forward to another demanding cohort of future leaders - at a moment when international understanding and flows of information are the only solution to the Covid threat. The confidence that the FCO, both in the UK and in foreign missions, have put in us is such a responsibility.”

The fellowship programme will commence in March 2021.
