On Monday 24 September, Professor Dibyesh Anand, Head of the School of Social Sciences, was featured in Al Jazeera News English talking about the new health scheme launched in India.

The Indian government announced it was going to roll out a new healthcare scheme that would be available for the entire population of the country, the second most densely populated one in the world. The new national health insurance scheme has raised questions around its sustainability and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intentions.

Describing it as a ‘publicity stunt’, Professor Anand explained: “The whole idea behind this campaign is to give the impression that he is caring for the poor people, but the reality is in the last four years the government hasn’t invested in the public sector, in terms of health.”
