Social Media and the Public Sphere
Delivered by Professor Christian Fuchs, this lecture discusses the implications of social media for power structures in society, the economy and politics.
It will raise questions such as: ‘What is social about social media?’ ‘What is the relationship of social media to the public sphere?’ This lecture aims to contribute to the public discussion of how the social dimension of the internet and the media can serve the public interest, the concept of a public service internet and how ideas for specific organisation, policy and funding models could look.
Christian Fuchs is Professor of Social Media in the Faculty of Media, Arts and Design, having previously been Professor of Media and Communication Studies at Uppsala University in Sweden. His research focuses on digital media and society, media and society and information society studies. He has published more than 200 academic works, including the books: Internet and Society: Social Theory in the Information Age; Foundations of Critical Media and Information Studies; and Social Media: A Critical Introduction.
